What is the area like?

Built way back in 1887 by a group of Jewish families Neve Tzedek has today become regarded as one of the most beautiful and stylish areas in Tel Aviv.

The exotic old world architecture, carefully renovated houses, narrow lanes and the relaxed residents of this neighborhood make it an oasis in the city. Small wonder the area is home to several independent fashion designers, artists and musicians. Situated in between cafes and restaurants are a host of small boutique shops selling locally designed products. Be warned, these small pedestrianized streets will tempt even the most reserved shopper.
From any direction the neighborhood of Neve Tzedek provides its residents with access to Tel Aviv and surrounding areas. A short stroll beyond the boundaries to the west of the district leads to Tel Aviv seafront promenade. Stretching from the Marina in northern Tel Aviv all the way through to the district of Jaffa in the south this boardwalk provides the visitor with access to all of Tel Aviv's beaches and Jaffa's culture. Exiting Neve Tzedek by foot to the north and east will lead to cultural landmarks such as Shuk haCarmel, shopping streets such as Shenkin and some of the best of Tel Aviv's bars and restaurants on Rothchild.

 

 

 

 

What shall I have for lunch?

The main street of Shabazi runs through the heart of Neve Tzedek and has enough options to satisfy every palate. Places worth a visit include neighborhood café Michele Bar which has simple yet tasty breakfast and lunch offerings and the occasional evening poetry reading. Close by is Café Restaurant Suzanna which serves Iraqi style food such as kube and stuffed vegetables. Just off Shabazi on Yehieli Street is the very popular Italian restaurant Bellini. Complete with red and white table clothes their traditional Italian fare is served in a great atmosphere.
However, if it's no frills you're looking for Hertzel Street (2 minute walk from Shabazi) is crammed full of fast food places serving favorites such as shwarma, falafel and hummus. A visit Buddha Burger on nearby Yehuda HaLevi is highly recommended. This place serves tasty vegan alternatives and is hugely popular with locals and tourists alike.
Walking along the promenade toward Jaffa also opens up a variety of meat and seafood options with Dr. Shakshuka and Little Itzik's worth a special mention. Be sure to go in on an empty stomach!

 

 

Where can I empty my wallet?

If the independent art, craft and clothing stores on Shabazi doesn't satiate your appetite to shop then a trip to the nearby Shuk HaCarmel will surely help. Tel Aviv's daily bazaar houses hundreds of stalls packed with clothing bargains, toys and souvenirs which stand side by side with bakery's, and the best fruit and vegetables Israel has to offer.
Twice weekly there is another market held on the adjacent street, Nachalat Binyamin. Here one can browse through the wares of local artists, fabric houses or sip coffee at one of the many cafes.
After an hour or two spent navigating the Shuk it's worthwhile crossing the road to Shenkin Street. This trendy area is home to some great local cafes and clothes shops.
If its high street labels you're after then a visit to Dizengoff shopping centre is well worth a visit. Located a short distance from Neve Tzedek, this mall houses international brands such as American Apparel, Golf, Castro, and American comfort. Every Friday the lower level is taken over by stalls serving tasty Middle Eastern cuisine at great prices.

 

 

Arts and Entertainment?

Located in the heart of Neve Tzedek is the Suzanne Dellal Centre for Dance and Theatre. Home of Bat Sheva (Israel's national dance group), this centre is one of the most visited tourist sites in Tel Aviv. A short stroll beyond here is Jaffa Railway Station. Recently restored to its former glory by the Tel Aviv municipality this station was the first railway station in the Middle East and is well worth a visit.
If its museums you are after then a trip to nearby Bialik Street is recommended. Here you can gaze at the oil paintings of Rueven Rubin in a museum dedicated to his works or slip across to Chiam Bialiks old home to mull over a selection of his poetry and manuscripts perfectly preserved since his death.
Jaffa port and surrounding areas hold a treasure trove of cultural and historical places of interest. During the day Jaffa flea market is alive with locals selling anything from antiques to fridge freezers. At night the beautifully lit walk ways are alive with the smells and aromas of local restaurants which accompany you on your sightseeing trip through Old Jaffa.
